Marinera
The Marinera is a spin-off from the zamacueca and the mozamala. It has steadily gained a foothold in the country's culture. In 1938, the genre was presented at the Independence Day concert. Today, there are marinera festival held all over the country. The best known festival is held in January in Trujillo. The dance is performed in several styles, depending on its place of origin. The dance is energetic, with elegant movements and complex dance moves. The dance couples use a handkerchief to keep time. The couple never comes in physical contact. The instruments that are used to perform the dance include the guitar and Cajon. There is sometimes a huge marching band that accompanies the dance.
